There are perhaps a few problems with this story’s internal logic, but only if you insist on looking at the Marvel Universe’s big picture. The big issue I see is that Captain America gives up Betty Ross’ secret identity to General Fortean instead of going another route. The most logical thing for Cap to do if he wants to track Betty down would be to bring in her dad, who knows her well enough to find her and talk her down but who can also take a punch if things go bad. Instead he turns things over to a man who has had an obsession with the various Hulks and who has gone so far as to subvert the will of the Pentagon in order to carry out his vendetta. You would think that Cap would be smarter than that. The good thing about Cap’s lapse in judgment is that it gets to show us what Betty’s made of. Fortean dispatches a pair of Echelon soldiers specifically designed to incapacitate the Machine Man and render Betty incapable of changing form. Betty’s the daughter of a general, though, and shows off her resourcefulness in escaping a group of armed soldiers, getting the drop on the Echelon soldier who is stopping the change, and then escaping. Definitely a cool moment for Betty.
Overall, this title continues to be a pleasant surprise that flew under the radar thanks to Marvel’s lack of marketing. The art is great, the story is interesting, and the characters are developing well. Up to this point, Red She-Hulk had everything anybody could ask for from such a title.
